Title: Abe L. Shushan Collection
The Abe L. Shushan Collection contains nearly 750 items including scrapbooks, photographs, and personal memorabilia of the former president of the Orleans Levee Board, under whose direction the Lake Pontchartrain sea wall and New Orleans Lakefront Airport were constructed. A close friend and associate of Huey P. Long, Abe L. Shushan was an influential and controversial public figure in the Louisiana political landscape during the 1920s and 1930s.

The Anthony J. Stanonis Collection is comprised of materials relating to the New Orleans tourist industry. Dating from 1902 to 1960, the guides, maps, brochures, books, and other literature document public and private tourism businesses. Anthony J. Stanonis gathered the materials during his research on the cultural and economic implications of urban tourism.

Title: Archives of Cajun and Creole Folklore
Begun in 1974, the collection is the most comprehensive repository of recorded and transcribed materials on French in Louisiana, as well as the Upper Mississippi River Valley, French Canada, the West Indies, and Africa.

Title: Carnival Collection
Tulane University's Louisiana Research Collection (LaRC) preserves possibly the largest collection of New Orleans Carnival paper and ephemera, such as invitations, dance cards, call out cards, printed float plates and bulletins, and original float and costume designs. Perhaps most notable among our Carnival collection are the more than five thousand original designs for Carnival floats and costumes we preserve. Many of these are from the "Golden Age" of Carnival and feature the work of noted designers such as Jennie Wilde, B. A. Wikstrom, and Charles Briton. LaRC also preserves the works of more contemporary designers, including Patricia Hardin, Olga Peters, and designer and noted Carnival historian Henri Schindler. We are in the process of putting our entire Carnival design collection online and hope to complete the project by the end of 2012. We expect to have the complete sets of float and costume designs from Carnival's "Golden Age" online by the end of 2011.

This series contains approximately 85 digital representations of Durieux's lithographs, cliche verres, electron prints and paintings.
Title: Charity Hospital Reports
Published from 1842 to 1974, the Charity Hospital Reports are vital to Louisiana's social and medical history and include information not widely available from the nineteenth century. The Charity Hospital Reports include public health information on morbidity and mortality (including information on the yellow fever epidemics in New Orleans), venereal disease issues, disease incidence, vital statistics, and hospital administration.

Title: Charles L. Franck and Franck-Bertacci
Charles L. Franck was a commercial photographer in New Orleans whose individual career and successors covered all but the first decade of the 20th century. In 1955, his studio was purchased by Albert Bertacci, who continued to operate within the same scope of assignments as Franck had done. Tens of thousands of photographs and negatives from the Franck and Franck – Bertacci studios, held at The Collection, chronicle the face and growth of Louisiana, and New Orleans in particular, during the 20th century. The change of the city through its photographed character focuses on major industries (the port, construction, transportation) during a period of racial integration, labor disputes and urban growth. Social and cultural events – Mardi Gras, weddings, private parties all feature in the collection as well. As the Franck Collection approaches the present day, the photographs of major building projects (the Louisiana Superdome, bridges across the Mississippi River, nuclear power plants and petrochemical complexes) touch on issues of suburban and exurban expansion, and environmental issues.

The Frank Moore Collection contains nearly 550 negatives, most of them glass plates, taken from 1915 to 1950. Well over half of the collection consists of individual and group portraits, many featuring performers in costume, musicians, and local schools.

Title: Jambalaya and T-Wave Yearbooks
The Jambalaya yearbook began publication in 1896 with gaps. It ceased publication in 2009. Completely produced by students, these visual time-capsules document the daily life of students at Tulane University and the former Newcomb College. In 1982, the students of the School of Medicine launched their own yearbook, the T-Wave, which is also available digitally through the Tulane University Digital Library.

Title: John Norris Teunisson Photographs
John Norris Teunisson (1869-1959), a commercial photographer, documented the New Orleans area during the first two decades of the twentieth century. The collection contains 467 vintage prints.

Between 1916 and the mid-1930s, John Tibule Mendes (1888-1965) was a consistent and curious observer of life in the Crescent City. His collection offers a vivid impression of New Orleans during the roaring '20s.

Title: Judge John Minor Wisdom Collection
John Minor Wisdom (1905-1999) was hailed as "a giant among federal judges during the tumultuous years that saw official segregation end in the South and civil rights at last extended to black Americans." This collection includes Carnival ball invitations, admit cards, dance cards, and programs; souvenir booklets; memorabilia of the Young Men's Gymnastic Club and other non-carnival miscellany.
Title: Leon Trice Louisiana political photographs
Leon Trice was a New Orleans area photographer, active from 1920 to 1972. He worked for the New Orleans States newspaper and later for the Associated Press. He also ran his own studio. This collection of Trice's political photographs spans the 1920s - 1940s with most of the photographs being from the late 1920s through 1930s. It depicts some of Louisiana's most famous elected officials in a variety of situations - campaigning, at home with family, in staged photo opportunities, at work, and even lying in repose. Among the political leaders featured are Huey P. Long, Earl Long, Richard Leche, O.K. Allen, and others. Preserving Louisiana's political culture is a special mission of the Louisiana Research Collection (LaRC). LaRC preserves the papers of many prominent Louisiana politicians, including Hale Boggs, Lindy Boggs, David Treen, Thomas C. Catchings, Sam Jones, Randall Lee Gibson, F. Title: Louisiana Coastal Ecology, Richard J. Russell Collection
Maps, aerial photographs, audio files, geographic surveys, and interpretative materials on Louisiana's coastal zone. Materials were used by geologist and geographer Richard J. Russell. Russell, who established a reputation as a world expert on the Mississippi and other delta regions, as well as on coastal erosion and coastal ecology.
Title: Louisiana Ecology and Conservation, The Percy Viosca Jr. Collection
While employed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, Percy Viosca, a pre-eminent herpetologist, documented the coastal Louisiana landscape between 1921 and 1932.

Title: Louisiana Menu and Restaurant Collection
The Louisiana Research Collection (LaRC) preserves extensive holdings documenting Louisiana's food and cooking culture, including several thousand menus, restaurant brochures, bar flyers, and other items essential for understanding the cuisine and food industry of our state. This online collection comprises three parts. Currently available are restaurant menus from the 1930s to the present. LaRC also preserves menus and brochures for hotel restaurants, as well as drink lists and promotional flyers for bars. Those extend to the 1910s and will go online during the summer and fall of 2012. Third, LaRC preserves banquet menus for organizations holding meetings and conventions. Extending back to the 1870s, we hope to put those online in the fall of 2012 and spring of 2013.

Title: Loyola University New Orleans University Photographs Collection
This collection is comprised of photographs dating back to the early 20th century from Loyola's University Archives. Early photographs include some taken by famed New Orleans photographer E.J. Bellocq. Since 1949, the university has employed an official photographer. While a large part of the photographs in the collection come from these university employees, many photographs in the collection are unidentified. When the photographer is known, photos will be credited to that person. Unidentified photos will be credited to the university.

Title: LSU Health Sciences Center Shreveport Photograph Collection
This collection of nearly 3,000 photographs documents the people, facilities, and events that were significant to the growth and development of the LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport. With several name changes over the years (Shreveport Charity Hospital, Confederate Memorial Medical Center, and LSU Medical Center), this multi-campus health care and educational institution has a 140-year history. Photographs in this collection are primarily the work of Gordon W. Maxcy, a registered biomedical photographer whose 34-year career began in 1948 at the Shreveport Charity Hospital. During his career he was responsible for photographing employees and hospital events and documenting the daily life at the hospital, nursing school, and medical school. Also included in this collection are historic photographs of the Shreveport Charity Hospital and staff from the late 1800s and the early 1900s taken by Burch Enos Grabill and William "Bill" Grabill, father and son owners of Grabill Studio in Shreveport.

This collection contains two different postcard collections found in the LSU Libraries Special Collections Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley manuscript collections. The Mississippi and Louisiana Postcard Collection contains 93 items and spans from 1906-1939 and the Louisiana Postcard Collection contains 517 items from 1904-1951. Many landmarks in Louisiana and Mississippi are featured in the postcards.

Title: Maps from The Historic New Orleans Collection
The Historic New Orleans Collection has extensive holdings of significant manuscript and printed maps. Acquisition was begun by The Collection's founder, General L. Kemper Williams, in the 1920s and '30s. Since then considerable additions have been made including a wide range of maps dating from early colonial times to the present.
Title: Mississippi River Flood of 1927 Photograph Album
a visual record of one of the worst natural disasters to occur in the U. S. The flood took the lives of thousands, made refugees of hundreds of thousands, and caused vast destruction. The photo album was prepared for O. K. Allen (1882-1936), Chairman, Louisiana Highway Commission and later Governor, and presumably used for securing Federal disaster aid.
Title: New Orleans Image Collections at the LSU Libraries
The majority of the images are from the New Orleans French Quarter Scenes, circa 1900, collection and the Vieux Carre photographs. Other manuscript collections represented include: New Orleans Dock Views, Horticultural Hall at World's Cotton Centennial and Industrial Exposition Photographs, New Orlean's Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral, and an assortment of Mardi Gras images. The original images are located at the LSU Libraries Special Collections Library.
Title: New Orleans Negative Exposures and Prints, circa 1900-1930
The majority of the images document New Orleans architecture and famous buildings such as the Cabildo, the Presbytere, the Pontalba Building, the Old Absinthe House, the Hotel Monteleone, and others, urban public spaces, and boats on the river near Girod Street pier just upriver from the French Quarter. A minority of the images documents private residences and United Fruit Company pier-side operations. The original images are located at the LSU Libraries Special Collections Library.

Robert Maestri (1889-1974), served as Mayor of New Orleans from 1936 until 1946. There are 833 photographs in this collection.
Title: Robert Tebbs Photographs
Robert Tebbs, the prominent New York based architectural photographer, traveled to Louisiana in 1926. In a series of two hundred prints, Tebbs documented the existing and often decaying conditions of the plantations homes in southern Louisiana.

Title: Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge Ivory Billed Woodpecker Records
The 95 photographic negatives and 100 photographic prints document 6 field seasons during the years of 1935-1941 during which James T. Tanner and associates studied the ivory-billed woodpecker and its environment on the Sanger Tract, Madison Parish, Louisiana, in what is now the Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge. Also included is Tanner's hand-drawn, two-sided map documenting nesting sites and other signs of the ivory-billed woodpecker's presence in the Singer and Ayer Tracts, Madison Parish.

Title: Tiger Rag - Student newspapers of LSU School of Medicine, New Orleans
The Tiger and The Tiger Rag were newspapers published by the students of Louisiana State University Medical Center. The Tiger, first published on September 19th, 1932, produced 8 volumes of issues from 1932-1940. From 1940 to 1946 it became Journal of the LSU School of Medicine and took a more scholarly approach. Following a brief hiatus, The Tiger Rag was published 1950 to 1994 by the LSU School of Medicine, New Orleans. Individual PDF files of the original newspapers are key-word searchable, or search the collection by subject and select headlines.

Verla Birrell was born in Tacoma, Washington. She was an artist, writer, poet, lecturer and teacher. She taught art, design, textiles, and related subjects at Brigham Young University from 1937 until 1948 and the University of Utah from 1948 until 1972.
