The School of Medicine
CHARLES CASSEDY BASS, M.D., D.Sc, F.A.C.P.
Dean
The School of Medicine occupies an enviable
place among the leading medical schools of the
country. Students and doctors from every state in
the Union and from many foreign countries come
to Tulane for medical training.
The Hutchinson Memorial Clinic in the New
Hutchinson Memorial Building provides for the
most practical training and experience in actual
care of patients. Each senior student has what
corresponds to a well equipped private office
where, under the supervision of an instructor, he
examines and treats his patients as he should do
later in private practice.
The College of Law
RUFUS CARROLLTON HARRIS, A B., LL.B., Juris. D., LL.D.
Dean
The Tulane College of Law was established in
1847 as the Law Department of the University of
Louisiana.
The curriculum of the College has been arranged
to provide for the special training of those who
intend to practice in Louisiana, and at the same
time to afford training to those who may wish to
practice in any of the other states. The College
owns one of the most complete law libraries in the
Southern states. It is a member of the Associa-tion
of American Law Schools.
It publishes the Tulane Law Review, which affords
a medium for the expression of the best thought
available on Comparative Jurisprudence.

The College of Commerce
MORTON ARNOLD ALDRICH. A.B., Ph.D.
Dean
The purpose of this college has been, since its es-tablishment
in 1914, to offer substantial profes-sional
training preparatory to a business career.
The instruction offered is planned for students
sufficiently able and mature to do work of uni-versity
grade, and no student is received unless
prepared to do work of this character. It is es-sential,
also, to the permanent success of the col-lege
that its students approach their work in an
earnest professional spirit.
In order to make the business courses available
for business men and women, classes are also held
at night from 8 to 9:45 o'clock. Each course
meets one night a week.
The College of Engineering
DOUGLAS SMITH ANDERSON. A.B.. M.A., D.Sc.
Dean
The College of Engineering offers broad courses
of professional training in the fundamental prin-ciples
of the different branches of Engineering and
Architecture, leading to the degrees of Bachelor
of Engineering and Bachelor of Architecture, re-spectively.
The courses offered are Mechanical and Electri-cal
Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical En-gineering,
and Architecture.
Within the past several years, extensive additions
have been made to the equipment of the engi-neering
laboratories, to the extent that they offer
excellent facilities for the regular undergraduate
instruction, as well as opportunities for the study
and investigation of special problems.

Dean
Mrs. Josephine Louise Newcomb founded New-comb
College as a memorial to her daughter,
Harriott Sophie Newcomb. In fulfillment of
Mrs. Newcomb's wish and her profound interest
in the people of New Orleans, the College en-deavors
to equip young women for effective and
intelligent service to society. A college of liberal
arts offering sound instruction in cultural and
scientific fields is the center of Newcomb. For
students suited by temperament or by special apti-tude
to develop a sound culture through Art or
Music, the College offers special four-year
courses in those subjects, leading to appropriate
degrees.
College of Arts and Sciences
EDWARD A. BECHTEL. Ph.D.
Dean
The College of Arts and Sciences is one of the
oldest colleges of Tulane University. It offers
courses leading to the degrees of Bachelor of
Arts, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Educa-tion
in Physical Education.
The curriculum is planned to give a general edu-cation
and, at the same time, affords opportunity
for specialization in some one group of studies.
Special courses offered prepare for the study of
Medicine and of Law. Among the elective
courses is included the Department of Journal-ism.
The course in Physical Education affords
preparation for athletic coaches and directors, to-gether
with training in academic subjects.

The Graduate School of Medicine, a department
of the College of Medicine of the Tulane Uni-versity,
provides post-graduate instruction to the
medical profession. The courses offered are
arranged to afford work from October to June of
each year, and during that time there may be
found medical graduates from all parts of the
country who come to avail themselves of the op-portunities
presented in order to keep abreast with
the recent advances in medicine and surgery, or to
specialize in the major branches.
Instruction during the forenoon is carried on in
the wards and clinics of the Charity Hospital,
Touro Infirmary, and the Eye, Ear, Nose, and
Throat Hospital, and the afternoon and evenings
comprise didactic lectures and work in the clinical
laboratory at the Hutchinson Memorial Building.

THE BRAIN
John B. McDaniel, Jr.
President oj ilte Student Council
Membership of the Tulane University Student Council is com-posed
of the presidents of the various colleges of the University
—
Medicine, Law, Commerce, Engineering, Arts and Sciences, and
Newcomb. Individual members are elected by popular vote in
each student body, and council officials are chosen by the members
themselves.
Unique in selection and powers, the Student Council holds a
place apart, if not an envied position, among institutions of higher
learning in this country. At the 10th annual congress of the Na-tional
Student Federation of America, held in Boston during
Christmas week, Tulane's system of student government was
lauded as the most democratic and liberal of those colleges repre-sented.
Rigid control over officially recognized student activities, author-ity
to acknowledge only those organizations which conform to
stated requirements, and budgetary and financial powers rarely en-joyed
by student governments are but evidence of the council's
characteristically exceptional authority.
The Tulane Student Council was organized in March, 1915,
at the installation of self-government at the University. For
twenty years, from Commencement to Commencement, a score of
Student Councils have functioned as supreme legislative, executive
and judicial bodies in every aspect of undergraduate activity.
Page 23
Important and indispensable in University affairs is the office
of Student Activities. Created a decade ago, this office has in re-cent
years become the liaison between the four component parts of
Tulane University—the student body, the administration, the fac-ulty,
and the alumni.
Calvert G. de Coligny, Tulane '32, is serving his third year as
Graduate Manager of Student Activities. Duties of this office re-quire
the incumbent to act as General Student Body Secretary,
keeping records of the Student Council, including records of all
receipts and disbursements of student activity fees; serving in an
advisory capacity to the Student Council in matters where prece-dent
may carry weight; and supervising and coordinating the man-agement
of student activities to secure clos:r cooperation in their
respective works.
Necessarily, the Graduate Manager of Student Activties must
cooperate as closely as possible with the Student Council. Execu-tive
orders of the undergraduate governing body must be adminis-tered
by the Graduate manager in order to secure coordination
among the various organizations and activities of the University.
Tulane was host during the spring of 1935 to representatives
of a vast number of universities and colleges of the Southland.
The Southern Federation of College Students, together with the
TRUSTERS
Southern Division of the National Student Federation of America
and southern members of the National College Press Association,
made New Orleans their headquarters on April 11, 12, and 13,
1935, for the annual meeting of the three bodies. John B. Mc-
Daniel, Jr., Student Council president, also served as president of
the joint convention.

T. U. R. K. CLUB
In line with the Alumni Association, the Turk Club does its part in boosting the University.
The Tulane University Rooters Klub (T. U. R. K.) was founded at Tulane in 1932 for the
purpose of promoting school spirit through the use of card displays, at football games, helping with
pep meetings and the selection of cheer leaders, and, finally, for the purpose of furthering better
intercollegiate understanding and relationship by meeting and entertaining visiting athletic teams.
Due to the competent assistance of the cheer leaders, excellent cooperation from the Newcomb
and Tulane students, and hard work of the T.U.R.K. members, card displays rivalling those of
the University of Southern California were put on at the Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Sewanee
football games. Because of the good work done by the T. U. R. K.'s in uniting the students and
stimulating their spirit in student activities, the future of the club is extremely bright.

IJE COUNTING the achievements and
•''^ events in the daily hves of the students of
the University is the function of the Tulane
Hullabaloo. For almost fifty years this pubhca-tion
has advanced with the University. It has
been the endeavor always to portray the human
side of University life. Even more important at
present is the fact that in a world of economic
insecurity the opinion of the student is sought
after. Tulane student thought is thus judged in
other quarters through its paper. An interest-ing,
lively, progressive paper indicates at least
that there is thought.

WHEN a dramatic club, now known as the Tulane University
Dramatic Guild, was organized in 1922, it filled a long felt
vacancy in the activities on the campus. Tulane has no chair in Dra-matics
and Elocution and the Guild attempts to offset this by giving
students a medium for expression along those lines.
Successful presentations of the Guild in recent years have been
"The Butter and Egg Man," "The Spider," "The Front Page," and
"Journey's End." These plays were produced without the aid of any
professional help except that of the director; students built the sets,
painted them, worked as stage-hands, and participated as actors. Each
presentation met with well-merited praise from those connected with
and outside of the University.
During 1934-1935 the Guild planned a very ambitious program and
carried it to a successful completion. The season opened on November
23, with a group of three one-act plays, "The Rising of the Moon," a
satire by Lady Gregory; "Poor Old Jim," a comedy by William De-
Mille, and "Copy," a drama by Kendall Banning. These three plays,
directed by Thomas J. Thriffley, Jr., were enthusiastically received.
During their production, experiments with scenery and lighting were
conducted back-stage.
"The Rising of the Moon" was the story of a fugitive from an op-posing
political faction. The play centered about a brief episode from
his life, telling of his escape from the long arm of the law by playing
upon the weakness of a sergeant on the force.
"Poor Old Jim" concerned an habitual drunkard. His wife was
driven to desperation by his continual tippling and with the aid of a
friendly doctor contrived a unique plan of reform which brought the
straying Jim back to the straight and narrow path.

"Copy" gave a brief and breath-taking glimpse into the turbulent life of a tabloid
newspaper office. Tragedy struck close to the city editor of this "yellow sheet," and
the tense activity of the paper on a big story, together with the suspense of the situa-tion,
provided thrills until the final curtain.
In keeping with its aims and ideals, the Guild announced at the beginning of the
year that it would give a prize of twenty-five dollars to the winner of a one-act play-writing
contest among the students. The winning play, selected by a committee com-posed
of Dr. Roger P. McCutcheon, Chairman, Dr. John M. McBryde, and Miss
Mildred Tonge, was entitled "An Honorable Rectangle," and was written by Joseph
D. Starr, a student in the College of Arts and Sciences. In the early spring of 1935 a
three-act play, "Spooks," was produced, together with a one-act play as curtain-raiser.

UNIVERSITY BAND
This }-ear the Tulane University Band has had the
most successful season that it has ever had with the
largest enrollment in its history.
The Band has played a very prominent part in the
activities of the University, as well as outside of it.
During the football season the Band traveled by bus to
Gainesville, Florida, spurring the team on to victory.
It accompanied the football team to the Louisiana State
University game in Baton Rouge and also played in the
initial Sugar Bowl Classic on New Year's Day.
Among other activities of the Band were the Armistice
Day and Community Chest Parades, the Carnival Pa-rades,
and the annual concert given in Dixon Hall.
The Band hopes to continue to render its services to
the University in particular, and to the community as a
whole.

LET
Let us toast the leaders who have not only contributed
much to the year's history, but also to the welfare of their
Alma Mater.
We might have called this section "Toasts Buttered and
Otherwise," but we do not wish to mention the unbuttered
leaders in distasteful fields.
"Randy" Feltus we salute for his genial sense of humor,
his personality, and ever-ready Mother wit; J. Byrd McDan-iel,
who has guided the steps of the Student Council as its
executive head; Claude "Little Monk" Simons, our choice
for the best all-around athlete at Tulane; Dean Harris,
whose insight into student affairs and recent election to the
presidency of the Association of American Law Schools has
won much admiration by friend, colleague, and student; T.
Hale Boggs, Hullabaloo editor and leader in debating and
forensic circles; Bob Daray, who, as golf captain, splendid
student, and earnest worker has aided his Alma Mater in
many ways; Marvin "Herr" Harvard, whose personality and
charm have won for him a score of friends and also many
hearts; "Lindy" Claiborne, attractive daughter of Sophie
H., who has gained popularity on both campuses through
her genuine good nature; Dr. ten Hoor, a leader in student
and faculty discussions as well as a true gentleman and
friend of man; "Ken" Cram, whose athletic ability, execu-

sound scholar, and real human being;
Lynne Hecht, constantly on top in Newcomb ac-tivities
and a debater worthy of note; George Tes-sier,
who ended his football career in a blaze of
glory and started out in the law school as presi-dent
of his class; Katherine Colvin, Newcomb sen

student body president and former glee club head
who represented Tulane in Boston this year; Ro\
Williams, Med school head and leader in medical
activities; Miss Many, popular Newcomb admin-inistratrix
beloved bv all; Hoyle Carlock, Alpha
Omega Alpha, Owl Club prexy, former fraternitv
head, and the pride of Ardmore; Dr. McBryde,
whose good advice and counsel have won for him
a place in the heart of everv student; Murray
Cleveland, former track and basketball captain,
president of O. D. K., honor student, and like-wise
D.D.; Dr. Alton Ochsner, whose record of
achievements in the field of medicine speaks for
itself; Arlene Z. Martin, secretary par e.xcellence,
who keeps Tulane activities "going" with her un-tiring
aid; Walter Dustmann, who has continued
the spirit of the Y. M. C. A., spurred his journal-ism
fraternity on to new fields, and has been of
excellent service to his Alma Mater. Last, but cer-tainly
not least, comes Cornelius J. Everett, Jr..
who would not have his picture taken, but who is
