Dear Applicant:
I take great pleasure in informing you of your appointment to the first-year medical class at the
Tulane University School of Medicine, to enter in August of 1998. 1 sincerely hope that you will
accept our invitation to take your medical training at Tulane and look forward to having you join us.
In order to reserve your place in the class, we must receive, within the next two weeks, written
notification of your intent to accept our invitation. At anytime between now and May 15, 1998, we
must receive a check, payable to the Tulane Educational Fund, in the amount of $500; this deposit
will be credited against your first tuition billing. Please understand this deposit is non-refundable
and, therefore, should not be remitted prior to your final decision to attend Tulane University School
of Medicine or May 1 5, which ever comes first. We ask that should you decide not to attend Tulane,
you inform us in writing so that we can maintain an accurate accounting of our class.
I am sure you will understand that your appointment is contingent upon successful completion of
the academic program in which you are currently enrolled, and maintenance of the level of academic
performance that was part of the basis for your acceptance. A final transcript of your grades must
be forwarded to this office as soon as your school year ends.
You will be receiving additional information concerning summer programs, combined-degree
programs, and other topics of interest as the year progresses. I and others at the medical school will
try to keep you well informed of all important or interesting topics.
On behalf of the students, faculty, and administration at Tulane, I bid you a most enthusiastic
welcome. If I can be of service to you in any way, please feel free to call upon me.
Sincerely yours.

Medical
School
The Tulane University School of Medicine
began as the Medical College of Louisiana in
September of 1834, as three brash young
physicians initiated medical education in the
state. Establishment of the school was met
with considerable opposition from the Creoles,
whose European ideas concerning medical
education stressed academics well-grounded
in the Latin and Greek classics. Nonetheless,
when the medical college opened its doors in
January of 1835, it became the first medical
school in the Deep South, and the fifteenth in
the country.
There were only eleven students in the first
class; tuition, fees, room, and board came to
less than four hundred dollars per year. The
first few years were difficult ones. Deans
seemed to come and go every year and there
were many abrupt faculty changes. But by
1843, there were over one hundred students.
Even then, diversity characterized the student
body. Students came from Alabama, Missis-sippi,
New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut
and Louisiana.
Medical school in those days was much
different than it is today. Only eight months
of lectures were required to recieve an M.D.
degree. The school year was four months
long. The same seven courses were repeated
over again during the second year of study.
The curriculum included courses in Anatomy
and Physiology, Chemistry, Materia Medica,
Principles and Practice of Medicine, Surgery
and Obstetrics and the Diseases of Women
and Children. Professors received no salary,
but were instead compensated by selling
tickets to their lectures to the medical stu-dents.
Instruction was wholly didactic.
Practical teaching was given only in Anatomy.
The lectures were delivered to the entire
student body assembled in a large room or
amphitheater. Clinical subjects were taught in
the same manner. Indeed, the unmotivated
students would graduate without ever having
attended a delivery, observed an operation, or
even having examined a patient.
The Civil War brought to a halt all formal
medical training in 1862. The Medical College
of Louisiana was fortunate to find financial
security. A wealthy New Orleans merchant,
Paul Tulane, bequeathed $1,250,000 to provide
for a new University. In 1884, the various

departments of the Medical College of Louisi-ana
were placed under the jurisdiction of the
new institution, Tulane University.
In 1910, Abraham Flexner, published his
report of the ranking and classification of
medical schools with Tulane ranked as one of
the top three Southern institutions. At that
time, Tulane's prominent faculty included Dr.
Rudolph Matas, a vascular surgeon, and Dr.
Isadore Dyer, a well-noted dermatologist who
was instrumental in the development of the
leprosarium in Carville, Louisiana.
In 1913, Tulane boasted a School of Phar-macy,
School of Dentistry, School of Medicine
and a Graduate School of Medicine. Only the
latter two remain today.
The Tulane Medical Center was organized in
1969 to broaden Tulane's commitment to
medical education, research, and patient care.
The Tulane Medical Center Hospital and
Clinic, the first such university hospital in
Louisiana, was dedicated in October 1976. This
300-bed hospital has enabled Tulane to consoli-date
a wide range of services in a tertiary care
environment and it has become a major referral
center for the region.
Since its founding 163 years ago, as the
Medical College of Louisiana, the Tulane
University Medical School has undergone
many changes, including the sale of a portion
of the hospital to Columbia HCA, and the
transfer of many of the clinical departments
from Charity Hospital to University Hospital.
Though Tulane originally catered to those
mainly from the South, it now attracts students
from all parts of the United States. From its
meager beginnings in 1834, the Tulane Univer-sity
School of Medicine has gone on to confer
over 12,000 medical degrees, 150 of which are
to be conferred on the Class of 1998. Paul
Tulane would certainly be proud of the many
fine physicians who have graduated from the
University bearing his name.

Dr. Paul Rodenhauser is a 1963 graduate of Jefferson
Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University where
he was elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in his junior
year. Following completion of an internship at York
City Hospital, Dr. Rodenhauser entered a rural gen-eral
practice for two years. During his subsequent
residency in Psychiatry at The Sheppard and Enoch
Pratt Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, he was elected
chief resident, a role that inspired his interest in ad-ministration
and education.
Dr. Rodenhauser joined the faculty of the Department
of Psychiatry and Neurology at Tulane University
School of Medicine in June of 1991. At Tulane, he has
been the recipient of outstanding teaching awards
from the Owl Club, Alpha Omega Alpha and the
psychiatry residents. He has also been recognized for
his teaching by the American Psychiatric Association
and the Association for Academic Psychiatry. He was the first recipient of the W. Clifford Newman
Award for Student Advocacy at Tulane and received the Gloria P. Walsh Award for Teaching Excel-lence.
He involves third year students in his clinical work at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and prac-tices
adult psychiatry at the Tulane University Medical Center. Numerous publications and local, national
and international presentations have developed from a variety of interests including administrative, forensic,
cultural, and clinical aspects of psychiatry, as well as issues, methods and strategies in medical education.
Creative writing has been an enduring interest for Dr.
Rodenhauser since becoming a New Orleans resident. His
poems have appeared in The Pharos and The Joimal of Poetry
Therapy. A novella, French Quarter Follies and two short stories,
"O'Malley's Business" and "The Trouble with LaSalle" are
scheduled for publication this year. One of his plays was read
on stage at the New Orleans Contemporary Arts Center in Febru-ary
of 1998. Dr. Rodenhauser attributes any success in the cre-ative
arts to the transcendental influence of his parrot, Beaucoup.

A man of knowledge chooses a path with heart and follows it;
and then he looks and rejoices and laughs; and then he sees and
knows. He knows that his life will be over altogether too soon;
he knows that he, as well as everybody else, is not going
anywhere; he knows, because he sees, that nothing is more
important than anything else. In other words, a man of
knowledge has no honor, no dignity, no family, no name, no
country, but only life to be lived, and under these circumstances
his only tie to his fellow men is his controlled folly. Thus a man
of knowledge endeavors, and sweats, and puffs, and if one looks
at him he is just like any ordinary man, except that the folly of
his life is under control.
-Carlos Casteneda
Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from
time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.

The physician should speak of that which is invisible. What is
invisible should belong to her/his knowlege and (s)he should
recognize illnesses, just as anyone who is not a physician can
recognize illnesses, just as anyone who is not a physican can
recognize them for their symptoms. But this is far from making a
physician; (s)he becomes a physician only when (s)he knows that
\s'hich is unnamed, invisible, and immaterial, yet has its effect.

'This is the true joy in life- that being used for a purpose recog-nized
by yourself as a mighty one. That being a force of nature,
instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances
complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you
happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole
community and as long as I live it's my privilege to do for it
whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die.
For the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own
sake. Life is not a brief candle to me. It's a sort of splendid torch

burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future gen-erations."

The Pineville Diaries
Reflections of a Student Doctor
[I'm not sure how interesting or useful this will be, but here are some excerpts from my journal last January. I promised I wouldn't use
anybody's real names, so to protect the innocent, I will refer to my roommate in Pineville as 'Ed'.]
January 7, 1997
Last year, Pineville truly looked like a golden educational opportunity. Now that I'm on the way, I feel more hke Marlon
Perkins on an expedition to study dummies in their natural habitat. While packing my car this morning, I felt a sense of dreac
dating back to the nervous days before starting another season of summer camp (Camp Young Judea, a New Hampshire
kibbutz where as a young Zionist, I learned to spin hand grenades on the pottery wheel and maim terrorists with popsicle
sticks). Only thirty minutes outside of New Orleans, the seek button sends the radio into a fruitless loop interrupted only by
an occasional lunatic sputtering about hell. This left me with plenty of time to consider the prejudicial baggage coming along
for the month: growing up in New England, I had been raised to believe that when not busy sodomizing Ned Beatty, your
typical yokel passes the day much like the characters of Hee-Haw.
I had a nightmare last night. In this dream, I am surrounded by square-dancing chuckleheads who spit chaw at me and cal
me a carpetbagger becuase I won the Civil War and I don't know how to dosie-do.
Just outside the city limits, there is a blue water tower with white letters bragging, 'Pineville: The Progressive City'. How
progressive could the town be if they need to elevate water to achieve enough pressure for indoor plumbing? After getting a
look at the drooling maniacs at the last gas stop, I would paint 'Pineville: The Recessive City'.
It turned out to be much more difficult than I imagined to get to the hospital. As Ed explained later, we asked for direction
from a mailman, the fire chief, the pohce chief and the town dog catcher. He didn't know.
Januarys, 2:00A.M.
Ed and I met during orientation, but I had no idea then that one day I would wake up in rural Louisiana and start winging
balled-up tube socks at his head, begging him to stop snoring. The guy snores so hard, I'd swear his nose was going to buckle
January 11
Since coming here, my name has been mistaken as Ratan, Atan, Aaron, Ron, and Raoul.
By the way, surgery up here is like winter break. I drag my sorry ass out of bed at an hour of the morning that would piss
off most monks, and as I slouch towards Huey P. Long, I notice the surgery students — the muffled grunting of A.M. cahsthen
ics from one room, the smell of Schlitz from the other.
January 13
I hate 4:00 A.M. I hope the only thing I will ever do again at 4:00 A.M. is pass out or have jet lag. Waking up this early
makes me want to cough up my gall bladder. To distract my stomach from digesting the rest of my innards, I choke down a
Pop-Tart and a half-pint of whole milk. I would gladly take an extra night of call if the kitchen would only buy some normal
flavors of Pop-Tarts, a frosted strawberry or a chocolate. Please, please no more of the gooseberry boysenberry crap.
A note on nutrition. For lunch I've been eating either smothered steak or fried catfish with french fries and whole milk.
This is the same salty lipid chum they dish out to patients on the medicine ward, so when Alexandria Fats rolls into the ER
clutching his chest, they send him upstairs for one of these all-you-can-eat euthanasia buffets. Much more of this and I run the
risk of reactivating some latent disease.
January 15
Eight days straight in scrubs and I still haven't figured out how to take a piss without leaving a dark spot. What I do is
wash my hands vigorously and get drops all over the scrubs, so people either think I'm very clean or very incontinent. I just
picked up a copy of this town's mullet-wrapper, the Alexandria Daily Town Talk. They call central Louisiana 'Cenla', making
it sound like some experiemental Utopia. Major news stories from fabled Cenla include a winter squash festival and a sheriff
who got stuck for four hours in the bathroom.

There should be an entry in this jtiurnal about the miracle of birth. I expected to bring life into the world. As it turned out,
e resident called me into the delivery room while shoving the baby back into the womb so I could wrestle into a sterile gown
id pretend to deliver. I stood between stirrups and the baby slipped into my hands. Cut the cord, pass off the warm bloody
jwborn to the nurse and congratulate the mom — I had a harder time changing a flat tire on my car yesterday. Of course,
at's not completely true, I'm just bitter about realizing how little 1 have to do with birthing.
Before 1 came here, someone told me this would be the case. Women don't need hospitals to have babies. Childbirth is a
itural process. Well, high infant mortality and vagino-rectal fistulas are also natural. It's that line of thinking that all things
atural' are good, as in herbs are better than a pill. Botulinum toxin and uranium are also natural, but they probably make
usy tea or incense.
inuary 19
There's a Jewish cemetery right next to Huey P. Long.
)ncerned that all of the Jews are dead and buried.
I don't know whether to be comforted by the religious presence, or
muary 20
I forgot how boring the OR can be. I find myself trying to scrub long enough to miss the surgery. Plus, it's the only proce-are
I get to do. Today, after scouring what was left of my forearms, I tied on a mask (I know it's a break in sterile technique,
it I wasn't even scrubbing in on this case) and walked in halfway through a TVH. Ed leaned towards me and said 'Hey,
ihh.... Is everbody doing it wrong or do you have your face mask on backwards'? So ends another episode of Charlie Brown,
3.
muary 22
Oh, if only my hairy standardized patient instructor could see me now. Forget all that polite, drawn out coaching. I've
camined about 70 vaginas so far, and most clinic visits go something like this: 'Hello-ma'am-hi-howaya-Iegs up-spread the
lees-one finger-two finger-lots of pressure-LOTS of pressure-and there we go-any questions?-see ya next year'.
What an amazing group come through these clinics. Embarrassed women my own age, pregnant kids, mentally ill patients
\d the grand multiparous veterans of the gynecological exams with old speculums lost in the folds of their tired vaginas.
70 pelvic exams. I will never have sex with the lights on again.
"larch 30, 1997
A return to fabled Cenla. When I left, I resisted the urge to look back, afraid I might turn into a placenta. Going home was
3t easy. Ed and I couldn't figure out how to make the jump from I-IO to 1-49 and waited out most of the trip on 90 East,
hich is like taking somebody's driveway from LaPayette to New Orleans.
I've just made it back from two nights of camping off the Wild Azalea Trail in Pineville. When I left the last time, I promised
.yself that I would never return unless under the auspices of the witness protection program. But I didn't mind it so much,
ozing off that night, looking at a sky clear enough to reveal the satellites. Hale-Bopp sailed by, and it felt comforting to know
lat I was not riding on an alien spaceship with 39 Californians, even more comforting to know I was finished with my Ob-Gyn
)tation.

Come, my friends

My dear friend, words can never express the impact that
you've made in my life, as well as my families. We first
met when you were eight years old and at that time I
knew that you were a very special person. Through the
years we've spend thousands of hours training in the gym,
traveling, competing, family dinners, and most impor-tantly
our personal time together. I was honored when
you became the Godfather of my son, "Michael." Your
love, loyalty, spirituality has blessed my family for years.
You are a man of God and everything you touch turns to
gold. I could never tell you I love you enough.
Your eternal brother. Rick

Our Dearest Vince, Twenty five years seems 1 ike it wisked pass al 1 of us, but when we
think of what you have accomplished in those years. . .you outgrew drawing dinosaurs although you still invest
in those plastic monsters, picking on Perry , hiding in the bathroom during swim meets , tel 1 ing the nuns that
you have varicose veins so you can keep your feet on the desk. . you even survived punching the bully at a
school dance. As a seventeen year old, you knew that you wanted to be a doctor and planned everything else
with that goal in mind. The electronics, statics, computer simulations were hurdles which your Mom did not
think SHE wil 1 survive. But you got through them with honors. Then came gross anatomy. . . that one was a bigger
bomber, .for your mom more than you. I think she had more sleepless nights than you at the time. . worrying
how she can survive med school ! ! During Thanksgiving dinner of your junior year we began to see the 1 ight.
you sounded 1 ike a doctor making a diagnosis that made sense. . even to Nanay . In a few months, you wil 1
fulfil 1 what you set to do eight years ago as a senior in high school . You have done very wel 1 !! We are sure
that whatever you have set to do as a young doctor, you wil 1 a 1 so do very wel 1 . YOU HAVE COME A LONG WAY

located on Florida's East Coast within a two hour
drive of Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West
Palm Beach. We're one of the fastest growing
metropolitan areas in the country, according to

Medical Center- Port St. Lucie (winter home of the
N. Y. Mets) and Raulerson Hospital - Okeechobee.
Our facilities are full service medical/surgical hospitals
and we also have psychiatric and physical rehabilitation
beds. We offer urgent care centers, outpatient surgical
centers and state-of-the-art technology... and an open
heart surgical program will open in the fall of 1998.
