While Snug Harbor makes you aware of Jazz 12
months out of the year, this year, well, we want to make you
extra aware as we celebrate the Louisiana iteration of Jazz
Awareness Month. The rest of the country celebrates it in
April, but we do things differently down here.
The month kicks off with Charmaine Neville and her
band on the 1st for the first of her five Monday night
performances in October. On the 2nd Loyola prof John
Mahoney leads his Big Band and then we'll clear the stage
completely on the 3rd for Phil Degruy who'll be alone with
his Guitarp. And then the stage will fill up again for Jonathan
Freilich and the Naked Orchestra. Are you aware that they
have a Manifesto .. . and clothes?
We're pretty sure you're aware of drummer Adonis
Rose. The New Orleans native, now based in Fort Worth,
celebrates the release of his latest disc, "On the Verge," on
Saturday and Sunday the 6th and 7th ... he'll be joined by an
All Star band, and by that we mean they are all stars. Ed
Petersen, he of the Tenor Sax and the UNO Jazz Program,
brings his Test to Snug on Wednesday the 10th. Bring a
Scantron and a number 2 Pencil.
Meet Him On Frenchmen St ... Shamarr Allen that
is, he's releasing his new CD "Meet Me on Frenchmen Street'
here on the 11th. He'll be the fellow with the trumpet. If you
come down to Frenchmen Friday or Saturday the 12th or
13th you can meet another trumpeter, Sean Jones and hear
why he's been nominated for Trumpeter of the Year by the
Jazz Journalists Association. He's erudite, too ... professes
music at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.
Be aware, be very aware ... Reading the musical
associations of Larry Willis, the pianist who'll be leading a
group of New Orleans All Stars on the 18th and 19th, is like
reading a who's who in jazz history - Carmen McCrae, Lee
·Morgan, Hugh Masakela ... and that's only a portion of the
"M's" ... (and Blood, Sweat and Tears, too). Willis kicks off a
weekend that also includes the New Leviathan Oriental Fox
Trot Orchestra, all done up in their dress whites on the 20th,
and on the 21st we have Lillian Boutte and her Music
Friends in an ultra-rare hometown New Orleans appearance.
Were you aware she lives in Europe?
And there's plenty more you ought to be aware of,
too. Like the Tim Green Band backing Venezuelan chanteuse
Maria Marquez on the 25th and then a sort of only-in-New
Orleans weekend where Friday the 26th has Ellis Marsalis
and his Quartet (there also here on the 5th and 12th) Saturday
the 27th you'll find Davell Crawford at the keyboard and on
the 28th it's Henry Butler for an evening of solo piano. And
I'm sure you are aware of our regulars, Jesse McBride and
the Next Generation on the 9th and every Tuesday thereafter,
and on the last three Wednesday's Irvin Mayfield and the
NOJO JAM. Of course JAM is the acronym for Jazz Awareness
Month so make thy·,elf aware of the start of the free NickelA-
Dance Series every Sunday afternoon in October at Cafe
Brasil and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation's
Jazz Journeys events all month and beyond
