In the past, one bean in a pound bag legally qualified as a Kona
Blend. As a result, the coffee was getting the reputation of a not ~
so superior coFFee, and Farmers were getting less per pound than ~
what they considered to be a "break even price."
But good news! The 1992 Hawaii Legislature passed Act 289, "The
Kona Blend Bill," which will require Kona percf:!·nt~ge disclosure in
blends. Additionally, this bill requires a minimum of 10% Kona in •
a Kona blend.
Currently, this law only applies to roasters and merchants in
Hawaii, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is considering a
petition of the Kona Council requiring similar standards in all states.
At P..J's we sell 100% Kona. We do not currently use Kona in any of
our blends. However, I have recently discovered that ~Kona - ~ Classic
French Roast (dark-roasted Kenyan AA) is an incredible combination. I
recommend it. Try your own. If it's good, let me know. I'll pass
it on.

Yes, it's true. April is
National Anxiety Month. Many associate
April with the sinking of the Titanic
(4/15/1912) and the Great San Francis
Earthquake (4/18/1906). But keep
in mind the great creativity born
in April. The safety pin was
patented on April 10, 1849, maybe
to hold everyone together, and
Leonardo da Vinci was born on
April 15, 1452. So stay calm, create,
and relax with some Chamomile tea when
the pressure's too high.

Dear Rene,
I am currently enrolled in college
and am studying History. I hope you
can help me out with a problem we are
f V~UJii having. I am a regular customer of PJ's 'fZ:::~ and hope you can h?l~. Th? name Tremoulet
All information for this article was taken from
Louisiana History, publ ished by the Louis1iana Historical
Association, Spring 1989, Volume XXX no. 2 "Maspero's
Exchange: Its Predecessors and Successors" by Samuel Wilson,
Jr. Thanks very much to Mr. Wilson and to the Society for
the information.
We invite you to come to PJ' s and make the most
important decisions of your life. Duels, however, are out
of the question.
Rene
has come up in Lou1s1ana H1story. I have
been assigned to do a report on him, but information is
scarce. Can you tell me where the Tremoulet Coffee House was
located in New Orleans? Also, are there any books on him or
the coffee House?
Thank you for your time. " " II II " II " II II II " II II II II II " II " II II II II II " " II II " II " II. "" "" Dennis

I contacted the Louisiana Historic Society and they were
very helpful. From the Historic New Orleans Collect ion, they
sent a well-researched article by Samuel Wilson, Jr. about
Tremoulet, a copy of which I sent to you. Briefly, here's a
little info about Tremoulet and the Commercial Coffee House:
l'--~ E:: ~ ~ ~ ~""""I ~ (:)~;:::S~()~

Sardinia, Claude Gurlie and Joseph Guillot, purchased a lot ~ c;) ~F:) ~ ~ 0--
which measured 75 feet on Chartres by 120 feet on St. Louis
and, after building was complete, leased the corner building
to Bernard Tremoulet. Tremoulet signed a 3 year lease for
rent of $4,000 per year. Pierre Maspero leased an adj acent
building on Chartres for $1,300 per year. Tremoulet promised"
the public, in an April 1, 1811 advertisement in the Louisiana
Courier to provide it "with the best the market can afford;"
sparing nothing "to render [it] worthy of public patronage."
Many historic events took place at Tremoulet' s. Patrons
there were shaken by the aftershocks of the December 1811 New
Madrid Earthquake which shook the Mississippi valley. Meetings
leading to Louisiana's admission to Union were held in
the coffeehouse in 1811. It was also a place to settle arguments
fashionably, in a duel with swords or pistols. When
Tremoulet operated the coffee house, the war of 1812 raged.
After the Bri tish took over Washington and burned the White
House, New Orleans had reason to fear invasion. In a September
1814 meeting at Tremoulet's, the Committee of Public Defence::
asked for "unity between the French and American segments of II
the population to form but one body, one soul, and defend toll ~
the last extremity your sovereignty, your property-defend your II ~.
own lives and the dearer existence of your wives and chi1dren."I1~
Bernard Tremoulet, unfortunately, found himself $65,00011
in debt. His second lease was cancelled by Gurlie and Guillotll
on October 6, 1814, and Pierre Maspero soon rented thel:
property.
