Cafe Sbisa, located in the French
Market area of the Vieux Carre', was
founded by the Sbisa family in J 899.
It was amongst many restaurants and
coffee houses in the thriving port and
financial district of the old French city.
These cafes served as social clubs as
well as drinking and dining
establishments for the city's financia
barons.
After the bank failure of J 929, the
financial district moved to the more
prosperous American sector above
Canal Street. Most of the restaurants
in the old port either moved or
perished. Cafe Sbisa did neither.
Today, it remains as a symbol of the
past, still serving excellent New
Orleans libation, as well as, classic
creole cuisine.
The historic building was erected in
J820. It was constructed in the
typical French manner, housing a
ship's chandleur on the lower floors,
with a proprietor's residence above.
The menu reflects many of the
grand traditions of La Cuisine Creole.
The philosophy is based upon simple,
well seasoned preparation of the finest
and freshest ingredients available.
