ouligny Restaurant takes its name from its location,
within the old Faubourg Bouligny that was
a residential development of the plantation of
Louis Bouligny, purchased by him in 1829 from
General Wade Hampton, a man of Revolutionary War
fame and owner of many plantations along the Mississippi
River. The property was developed as a subdivision between
1834 and 1837 by Bouligny in half interest with
Laurent Millaudon and Samuel Kohn. This was part of the
uptown expansion of New Orleans following the path of
the New Orleans and Carrollton railroad along the Cours
des Nayades (St. Charles Avenue) connecting the town of
Carrollton and the city of New Orleans. Napoleon Avenue
was the center of the Faubourg which stretched
from Lowerline Street (General Taylor Street) to Upperline
Street, simply the lowerline and upperline of the
suburb.
A t this time New Orleans was experiencing
another "French Craze" with the arrival in 1834
of Dr. Francesco Antommarchi. Dr. Antommarchi,
who attended Napoleon in exile at St.
Helena, presented the noble Frenchman's bronze death
mask to the city. In the spirit of the times, the developers
named their streets for Napoleon and his victorious battles
- Milan, Austerlitz, Berlin, Marengo, and Constantinople.
During World War I, Berlin was changed to General
Pershing. Young Napoleon first joined his regiment
at Valence, so a street was called Valence. Lyon and
Bordeaux are two French cities prominently associated
with Napoleon, hence their names. Cadiz (Street) was on
the coast of Spain near enough to the battle of Trafalgar
for the guns to be heard. After the fashion of signatures,
two public places in the Faubourg Bouligny were named
Lawrence Square and Samuel Square for Laurent (Lawrence)
Millaudon and Samuel Kohn_
T he building which now houses the Bouligny
Restaurant was constructed in 1882 from designs
by the noted architect James Freret for
the volunteer fire company known as the
Hall Home Hook and Ladder Company No.1, founded in
1858 as a bucket and axe brigade. In 1861 the organization
disbanded to become a part of the 14th Louisiana
Regiment of the Confederate Army. It was immediately
reformed from remnants of the "Old Blue Engine Company"
and other volunteers that had not entered the
Army. The building was sold in 1890 to the newly organized
city Fire Department under which it functioned
until 1928.
