Awards were presented to 15 members of the senior class of the Louisiana State university school of medicine on Saturday morning at a precommencement convocation in Charity hospital auditorium.
The George S. Bel award to the student who "symbolizes the highest ideals of medicine" was presented to John C. Hundley of Monroe. Hundley was selected from the 10 students who have the highest scholastic average in the class. The award of $100 was presented to Hundley by Mrs. Bel, widow of Dr. Bel, who was director of the department of medicine at LSU from the time the school was founded until his death in 1939.
Other awards, consisting of books and subscriptions to medical journals, were presented by Dr. Edgar Hull, head of the department of medicine of the LSU medical school.
Ralph Levin of Flushing, N. Y., received the. J. S. Majors Company award for making the highest scholastic average in pathology. The Alpha Kappa Kappa award, made each year to the senior student "who by unselfish activity and positive accomplishment has done the most to elevate the professional standards of his class" was conferred on two recipients, Catherine Goetz of Natchez, Miss., and James French of Water Valley, Miss.
Eight students were selected for the C. V. Mosby Publishing Company awards, made on a basis of scholarship. They were Norton Dickman, Kopel Burk, Mignon Jumel, all of New Orleans; Frank Reiger of Baton Rouge; Julius Muelling, Gulf port, Miss.; Thomas tMcGraw, Huntington Park, Calif.; William D, Wheat, Grand Bayou, La.; James McLain, Jackson, Miss.
Rafael Sanchez of New Orleans, Monroe Samuels of Pineville, La., and Merlin Rae Robinson of Holum, La., were named to receive the Josiah C. Trent memorial award. The American Academy of Dental Medicine award to the senior "who has manifested significant interest and proficiency in dental medicine" was made to Charles Peres of New Orleans.
Diplomas will be presented June 3 at the regular commencement exercises on the Baton Rouge campus.
