A doctor at the LSU School of Medicine who has directed research on the anti-histamine drugs for more than three years gave an appraisal of the drug today.
Dr. John H. Seabury, head of the lung station at Charity Hospital gave the following score:
- They do not prevent or cure the common cold, although they do alleviate some of the symptoms if taken in time.
- Some of them give partial relief to hay-fever victims.
- Less relief is obtained by asthma sufferers.
A run-down of the "ifs, ands and buts" of the situation reveals there are a number of anti-histamine drugs, benadryl and pyrobenzimene being the two best known. Each has different effects on different people.
Therefore it is not only useless but in many instances dangerous to use them without a doctors guidance.
