Approximately 800 sailors and civilians at the Algiers Naval Station Friday heard details of a nonmilitary war now being fought against one of mankind's worst enemies.
They heard lectures on cancer and saw an animated color, cartoon movie, "The Traitor Within," produced by. the American Cancer Society, The morning and afternoon programs, sponsored by the Orleans parish unit of the society, were arranged in co-operation with B. H. Peacock, station safety engineer, and Lt, J. L. Murphy, safety officer.
In line with the Navy's large scale industrial health program, Friday's activities marked the beginning of the local cancer unit's intensified public education program for 1950.
A similar program, attended by approximately 300 employes of the veterans administration, was held at Rabouin auditorium, 727 Garondelet. Medical speakers at the latter meeting, which also featured films on cancer, were Dr. Walter Levy and Dr. Ambrose Storck.
Both programs stressed the fact that many types of cancer are curable, when caught early and treated promptly.
