Louisiana State University and Tulane University hope by September, 1950, to have some helpful new facts about early cancer diagnosis.
Both medical schools are studying the Papanicolau methods of detecting cancer before it becomes incurable.
The National Cancer Institute is financing the studies.
The LSU research team, under the direction of Dr. Joseph M. McCormick, Dr. Robert M. Staintoa and Miss Jacqueline Souderes, hopes by 1950 to determine the accuracy of Papanicolau's methods and the relative values of these compared with usual procedures; to find how much responsibility a specially trained technician can undertake in these techniques, and to provide a training center for personnel in these methods.
The Papanicolau methods examine the cells which are "shed" into the body cavities or elminated through one of the body openings.
