For 50 years of service to Touro Infirmary, Dr. Urban Maes, consultant in surgery, was honored Monday night as "a great surgeon, a great teacher and the embodiment of kindness."
A bronze plaque was unveiled and dedicated in his honor at ceremonies at the hospital. To be placed in a corridor of the hospital, t.h e illuminated plaque pointed out that "in these rooms, a great surgeon has performed many operations, saved countless lives and by his skill and judgment, trained hosts of young men.
Also professor emeritus of surgery at Louisiana State university medical school, Dr. Maes was said to have helped the school to obtain the "highest rating from the standardizing authorities in the field of medical education."
