The LSU medical school's pedi-atric department was dedicated today to finding a solution to one of the South's greatest medical problems — its child mortality rate, the highest in the natino.
The promise for extensive work to such a solution was made by Dr. Myron E. Wegman of New York city, whose appointment, effective immediately, as professor of pediatrics and director of the department of pediatrics at the school, was announced.
Pointing to the anomaly which is indicated by figures that show the child mortality rate highest in regions where conditions should be best for their survival, Dr. Wegman said, "Obviously there is something wrong. The South, with its climate, by all reason should be the region best suited for the healthful development of children."
The solution, he said, lies in better equipment, better trained personnel, better preventive measures, and parental education.
