Phi Chi, an international medical fraternity, Monday began a two-day New Orleans convention with general business sessions at the Jung Hotel. Approximately 150 surgeons, physicians and medical students are taking part in the 38th Grand Chapter convention, hosted by Lambda Sigma Chapter of Phi Chi at Louisiana State University Medical School. They represent 53 chapters from the United States, Mexico, Canada and Puerto Rico. Following a Monday morning business session the group took a sightseeing tour of the city. A "fellowship hour" and stag banquet were held Monday night, with editorial cartoonist John Chase as speaker. Tuesday's meetings include the annual election of Grand Chapter officers and seletion of a 1965 convention site. Chairman of the convention is Dr. Rudolph F. Servers of Blair, Neb., who said the fraternity is the world's largest such medical group with a membership of about 50,000 physicians and between 3,500 and 4,000 medical students. The fraternity's objective, he said, is to continually improve the scholarship program of medical schools and produce "more rounded" physicians. The Grand Chapter, last met in New Orleans in 1955.
