The American Cancer Society has awarded an $11,000 sustaining grant to the Charity Hospital Tumor Registry, it was announced Wednesday.
Presentation of the check was made by Ewell P. Walther Jr., vice-president of the ACS Louisiana Division, to Dr. Leo J. Kern, director of Charity Hospital, and Dr. Edward T. Krementz, head of the registry.
In making the presentation, Walther said of the facility's value: "The more than 25,700 fully documented case records of malignancies kept on file in the registry provide invaluable material to research; scientists seeking the cause and cure of cancer. They also furnish the practicing physician with sound evidence of the growth and morbidity of the whole range of cancerous diseases he may be called upon to treat."
Also supporting the registry are the Tulane and Louisiana State University Medical Schools, Louisiana Health Department, and the Louisiana State Medical Society.
