Dr. James B. Heneghan, a Louisiana State University medical school instructor, has Received an American Cancer Society research grant of $19, 104. The check was presented to the instructor of surgical research and physiology by Joseph M. Carriere, president, and Ewell P. Walther Jr., vice-president of the Louisiana Division of the American Cancer Society. The grant will be used to continue experiments to determine the role bacteria is playing in cancer, Dr. Heneghan said. "If is because of gifts such as this that we're able to carry on studies which might lead to the cause of cancer." John L. McCarthy, executive director of the society's state chapter, said great strides have resulted from experiments being carried out by the American Cancer Society. "The general picture is one of promising research leads developing on many fronts," McCarthy said. ''There are new and effective drugs. There is tremendous knowledge on the molecular level on how cells control heredity and chemistry." The society's research grants are financed through public contributions. PHOTO: DR. JAMES B.
