Some 292 volunteer workers were honored by the Greater New Orleans Area Unit of the American Cancer Society at a coffee party Tuesday morning at the Royal Orleans Hotel.
According to Dr. Neal Owens, president of the local unit, 1963 has been designated by the American Cancer Society as the "Year of the Volunteer," in recognition of volunteer contributions to the society.
Tribute was paid to the 15-year volunteers, Mrs. Charles E Richards and Dr. Joseph E.~ Schenthal; nine 10-year volunteers; 55 five-year volunteers, J and 226 "Crusaders," as well as the unit's Crusade leadership. A Crusade Leadership Award was presented to William H. Saunders Jr., 1963 Crusade chairman. Other Crusade leaders honored included Mrs. Elmo D. Cire, Mrs. Furman B Pearce, Mrs. Frank H. Lang ridge, Mrs. Marion Munster Edward Poitevent, James E Roddy, J. Marion Legendre William R. Fagan and Mrs. An thony Pizzolato.
Mrs. Cire, in turn, made awards to 138 one^year Crusa ders and 88 three-year volun teers, while Dr. Owens presented awards to members of the news media.
