There was music, there were tears, and there was an election Tuesday at the opening session of the 39th annual convention of the women's auxiliary to the Southern Medical Association.
In keeping with the "Sing Along With Southern" convention theme, the new president, Mrs. Paul Gray, assistant professor of music at Arkansas College in Batesville, sang for the some 1100 doctors' wives who had registered by 10 a. m. Tuesday for the sessions at the Sheraton-Charles Hotel.
Mrs. Gray's little daughter, 11-year-old Mary Ann, will sing Wednesday at the Doctor's Day luncheon.
The tears came during an emotional moment when the re-; tiring president, Mrs. Elias Margo of Oklahoma City, gave her report. She was near the end when she broke into tears. Others in the room began to weep, too. Then they all rose and gave her a standing ovation. SEVEN OTHERS ATTENDING
Mrs. Margo's two sons and their wives and her daughter and husband are here for the convention. The president's husband is here, too, attending the
SMA convention being held concurrently. Other members of her family here are Dr. and Mrs. Marvin K. Margo (he is practicing with his father), Mr. and Mrs. Donald Margo of Jackson, Miss., and Mr. and Mrs. William Martin McGee of Ponca City, Okla.
They are all here except her seven grandchildren — six boys and a girl, Margo McGee, their grandmother said.
Mrs. Marvin Margo is the retiring corresponding secretary for the SMA auxiliary.
There was also the red carpet treatment from the city— and a key to the city and honorary citizenship papers for| Mrs. Gray presented by Councilman Joseph Di Rosa.
She feels right at home in the Deep South, said Mrs. C. Rodney Stoltz, Watertown, South Dakota, president of the AMA auxiliary. Her maiden name was Virginia Lee Cotton, and her grandfather was a Confederate soldier who fought under General Robert. E. Lee, she told the audience.PHOTO: MRS.
