Nurse anesthetists heard their profession extoled as a "vital link" in the operation team by Dr. Jesse Mullen at a refresher course at Charity Hospital.
Dr. Mullen pointed out problems of anesthesia during neurosurgery, and explained "any little error can be disastrous to a patient." He said that the nurse anesthetists must watch many factors that are highly important — breathing cardiovascular and blood pressure.
He said particularly must the anesthetists take care that no added pressure is applied to the skull or cranium of accident victims.
Dr. John Adriani told the nurses of the various complications caused by local anesthetics and other drugs during general anesthesia. He noted, for instance, that certain tranquilizers can cause a severe drop in blood pressure, and they should be discontinued at least 24 hours before surgery.
Dr. Adriani also said that certain diuretics for high blood pressure and anti-hypertension drugs should be watched by the anesthetists.
The meeting was presided over by Miss Mary Regus, president of the Louisiana Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
