The Calcasieu-Cameron Tuberculosis Association — Lake Charles affiliate of the Louisiana Tuberculosis Association —-Tuesday called for the "reform" of Charity Hospital here.
The group, according to Clyde E. Stewart, president, said his organization made the appeal in the form of a resolution.
The resolution reads in part:
"Whereas the ... association is directly concerned in the present and future status of the Lake Charles Charity Hospital, and ... the Lake Charles | Charity Hospital is solely dependent on the New Orleans | Charity Hospital for its supply |of interns:
"Resolved—that the . . . association go on record as favoring the removal of all politics from the New Orleans Charity Hospital and placing it under the administration of the Louisiana State University and Tulane University Medical Schools.
"— That these two medical schools be allowed to run the hospital properly in order to attract more interns and residents and to render better medical care ...
"—That more money be appropriated to the annual budget of the New Orleans Charity Hospital and LSU School of Medicine so that these improvements may be permanent and lasting."
W. Findley Raymond, executive director of the state association, made this comment on the resolution:
"Obviously the administration of Charity Hospital cannot be relinquished to the medical schools because of the latter institutions' basic educational purposes and because of the vast amount of work the schools have to handle for their own
programs.
"However, the removal from political influence and political decision of the hospital's administration has been called for more and more frequently in the past year.
"It is evident that when a community as far from New Orleans as Lake Charles begins calling for reform in New Orleans' Charity. Hospital, study and subsequent action is prescribed."
