Dr. A. N. Sam Houston, chairman of the medical committee of the Charity Hospital Board of Administrators, has resigned from the board.
Another development revealed at the annual meeting of the hospital medical staff last night was a statement by Hospital Director Dr. Leo J. Kerne that he may not continue in the job during the next state administration.
Dr. Houston has been succeeded by Dr. Robert F. Azar,
a New Orleans ophthalmologist who teaches at the Tulane Medical School. 'Very Likely"
Dr. Kerne told the medical staff-it was "very likely the last time" he would speak to the group as director.
He did not elaborate, but when questioned after the meeting said he is not sure he would like to continue even if he is re appointed by the next governor.
Board policies have been under fire in recent months by critics, including teaching staff members, who contend too much political control from Baton Rouge is exercised over hospital operations, and that Charity—one of the largest general hospitals in the United States—is in danger of going downhill. Named In 1956
Dr. Kerne was first appointed director in August, 1956, by Gov. Earl K. Long. He was reappointed in 1960 by Gov. Jimmie H. Davis.
Dr. Houston was not at the meeting last night when his resignation was revealed.
John W. Bowen, board vice™ chairman, said later Dr. Houston quit for "personal reasons." He said the physician told him he was unable to devote adequate time to be an efficient board member. Close Friend
Dr. Azar said he is a close friend of Dr. Houston and accepted the appointment only because he hopes to be able to "continue his excellent work."
Dr. Azar is a senior visiting staff member at Charity. He was graduated from Tulane Medical School in 1952 and trained at Charity and other medical centers here and abroad.
The medical staff chose Dr. Edward T. Krementz as its president. Other new officers are Dr: Richard M. Paddison, vice-president, and Dr. Brian H. McCracken, secretary.
Dr. Harry E. Dascomb and Dr. Keith Reemtsma w ere elected members-at-large to the credentials committee.' The new officers also will serve on the credentials committee.
