Dr. William J. Stuckey Jr. is the recipient of the Jeannette Durham Memorial Research award, named in honor of the late executive leader of the Louisiana Rainbow Girls.
Dr. Stuckey, assistant professor of medicine at Tulane university, will study the body's capacity to speed up production of red blood cells in certain anemic diseases in which the normal life span of* the cells drops from an average of 120 days to a fraction of this time.
The study of the blood cells was selected by the Louisiana Heart Association. Dr. Stuckey has been given a $5747 grant to cover expenses of the research. STARTED SALES
Mrs. Durham, who helped inaugurate the Rainbow balloon, sales for the Heart Fund two years ago, died of a heart attack in January. She has been sue-, ceeded as state Rainbow leader by Mrs. Bryce W. Patton. ■ Dr. Richard L. Fowler, president of the Louisiana Heart Association, announced the award grant.
He said that the Rainbow assemblies during the past two Heart Fund campaigns have raised about $13,000 to help support the association's program. 100,000 SOLD
Miss Martha Owen of New Orleans, a past worthy advisor of Benjamin K i p p e s Assembly, served as the Rainbow Girls' Heart Fund chairman for the past two years. She co-ordinated the statewide balloon sale.
Dr. Fowler said the Rainbow Cfirls, who were joined in several parishes by other Heart Fund volunteers, sold about 100,000 balloons throughout the state for the Heart Association program.
