Gen. Troy Middleton, retiring president of Louisiana State university, was honored last night at a banquet closing out his career.
"Eisenhower once said 'Send Gen. Middleton anyway. I don't care if you have to send him on a litter, but send Middleton," civil district court Judge Oliver P. Carriere said in a tribute to the retiring scholar-soldier at a dinner sponsored by the Metropolitan division, LSU Alumni Association.
The retiring university president was presented with a plaque which read in part:
"We salute a Southerner, who in the finest tradition of our noblist soldier-^citizens, is himself the living measure of our heritage and the incarnation of our ideals," The plaque was presented by Mrs. Thomas D, Ashley Sr., president of the local alumni as-sociation.
Gen. Middleton, who helped chase Pancho Villa in Texas, who made the decision to hold Bastogne and who helped carve much of LSU's progress, received testimonial telegrams from Sen. Russell B. Long, Ambassador Chep Morrison and state adjutant general Raymond H. Fleming. Other speakers at the dinner at the Royal Orleans were Dr William Frye, dean of the school of medicine;. Col. Tom Button, a member of the LSU board of supervisors: Dr Joseph G. Tregle Jr., vice-presi dent of Louisiana State university in New Orleans, . and Glenn P. Clasen, chief administrative officer of the city.
