Dr. Daniel Borth, executive vice - president of Louisiana State university predicts that by 1970 LSU will have an enrollment of 31,000 students at Baton Rouge and its branches. .
In an address to New Orleans area legislators at the LSJJ_medical s c h o o 1, Dr. Borth said he expects 10,000 undergraduate students at LSUNO by 1970.
Dr. Borth and LSU president Troy Middleton outlined LSU's request for a tax-supported appropriation totaling $25,422,753 for 1961-62. $3.7Million Hike
This is an increase of $?,-702,058 over last year.
LSU's immediate building needs, Dr. Borth said, amount to 128,365,000. He said LSUNO needs immediately .$8,175,000 for construction while the Baton Rouge campus will need $15,935,000.
Dr. Borth said that of the $2.7 million increase, $1,135,-000 would be for pay adjustments, 1486,920 would be for expansion of LSUNO into its fourth year, and $272,765 for expansion of LSU at Alexandria into its second year. He said $262,242 . would be . for increased costs of construction and research supplies. Cost Per Student . He estimated the instructional cost for freshmen and sophomores at $646 ayear, per student, and for juniors and seniors, $934. Law students cost $1449 while graduate students cost $1832 and -medical students $4244 a year. , Dr. Borth said the university's multi-campus operations make the increase of 11.9 per cent necessary. But he said this is a modest figure when compared with the University of Tennessee which will have a 22 per cent increase, Florida which is up 18 per cent and Indiana which is up 26 per cent.
He said LSUNO now has 2500 students, and this will go up to 3050 students next year. It will represent one-third of the undergraduate students of the entire university. Need Funds 'Now*
"We have got to have the $8,175,000 now," Dr., Borth said. "We need classrooms and science laboratories at LSUNO. If we don't get the building program on the road we will have difficulty accommodating these students."
Gen. Middleton said that LSUNO is not doing as well as the university authorities would like to see it do.
He said LSU wants to run a proper branch on the lakefront "or not run anything at all." Hiddleton said LSU does well in many areas, particularly in athletics, and he pointed out the athletic program does not cost the taxpayers a dime. : "I'm never going to admit , that this country cannot support higher education. That is perfectly ridiculous," said Middleton.
