The Tulane university cancer detection clinic at Charity hospital has done an effective job in finding not only cancer but other diseases.
Dr. Joseph E. Schenthal made that statement in addressing delegates to the Institute for Registered Nurses of the Greater New Orleans Area at Baptist hospital Wednesday. He said the clinic has examined almost 12,000 persons since 1946. He is director of the clinic.
One person out of each hundred examined can be expected to have cancer, he said. Four others will have a lesion that can be expected to develop into caiicer. OTHER DISCOVERIES
Time and effort in looking for cancer pays off in other ways, Dr. Schenthal said. Heart disease, infections, kidney disease, vascular disease and glandular diseases are also discovered.
Mrs. Velma D. Arnold, chairman of the nursing advisory committee of the American Cancer Society, said the three-day institute for registered nurses is designed to provide the latest information and techniques used in nursing cancer patients.
Other speakers at the opening session Wednesday were Miss Lil-lie H. Nairne, director of the public welfare department here; Miss Jeannette K. Laquaite, of the Tulane schoolof speech; £>£ Billy Taylor: Dr. Delio D. Del-gado; Miss Mary Murphy, R. N., supervisor of nurses, Jefferson parish, and Miss Elizabeth Moser, director of nursing service, at Foundation hospital. Miss Murphy and Miss Moser presided at the morning and afternoon sessions, respectively.

Speakers scheduled for Thursday's session are Dr. Winston H.
eese^ who will discuss cancer detection in gynecology, and Sister Mary Anna, of DePaul hospital, who will talk on psychiatric nursing principles in cancer nursing.
The institute is open to all registered nurses in Jefferson, Orleans and St. Bernard parishes.
