The Louisiana state board of health has been awarded a grant of $25,000 by the US Public Health Service National Heart Institute for a special nutrition research project.
Dr. William J. Rein, state health officer, said the project is in connection with a worldwide investigation of the relationship between dietary habits and atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.
The ailment is responsible for many of today's heart attacks. The project in Louisiana will be to establish Louisiana diet patterns.
It will be under the direction of Miss Margaret C. Moore, chief, nutrition section, division of preventive medicine, Louisiana state board of health.
The project will help test the theory that certain diets tend to raise serum cholesterol levels, increase fatty deposits on the inner linings of blood vessels, thus restricting blood circulation and making heart attacks more likely, it was explained.
