Former State Representative Percy E. Roberts received the fourth annual award of the Louisiana Association for Mental Health Thursday for outstanding contribution to the mental health program of the state.
The award, in the form of a plaque, was presented to Roberts at a meeting of the Mental Health Assembly, which closed a two-day session Thursday at the association headquarters, 1528 Jackson ave.
In making the presentation, Dr. W. W. Frye, association president, said, after assessing the contributions of various people to mental health services in Louisiana, "a committee of our board has singled you out, Mr. Roberts, for this recognition."
"Without being completely definite as to the day, we believe your interest in the mental hospitals of the state dates back about 15 years," added Dr. Frye, who is also dean of the Louisiana State university medical school. "At that time, you were a member of the state Legislature and you took a committee from the House of Representatives out to see the conditions in Jackson, La."
Dr. Frye said, "The housing and care in one of the wards so shocked you that you got through the Legislature, eventually, a building program that amounted to several millions of dollars."
