To aid in cutting down the maternal and infant mortality rate in New Orleans, considerably higher than the general average for the country, Dr. Rigney D'Aunoy, dean of the LSU medical school, announced yesterday the ,start of a home delivery service in co-operation with Charity hospital and the New Orleans Department of Public Welfare.
"Students of the school of medicine are assigned to the home delivery service during the period in which they are assigned to obstetric duty in the wards of the teaching, hospitals," Dr. D'Aunoy said. "They assist the nurse in the preliminary observation of the patient, conduct the delivery under the supervision of residents attached to the LSU obstetric service in Charity hospital, and pay post-par tal visits for 10 days following the birth. Only entirely normal cases are delivered in the home."
