Medical science has now determined that there are only three types of polio, Dr. Simon V. Ward, New Orleans physician, told a luncheon meeting of the Rotary Club Wednesday at the St. Charles hotel.
These three, he said, are known as the "Brunhilda" type, named after a monkey at Johns Hopkins hospital used in experimentation; the "Lansing" type, derived from a Lansing, Mich., man who died of polio; and the "Leon" type, named after a Los Angeles, Calif., boy who also died from the disease.
Discovery of these different types was a main factor in the
ultimate discovery of the Salk polio vaccine, Dr. Ward said.
