What is going to be done about the numerous
recommendations made in a voluminous report on mental health needs in Louisiana received
here last week?
Dr. Edward D. Grant, director of the state department of institutions, says that major emphasis will be placed on three key recommendations.
These recommendations are: (1) Replacement of fire trap buildings at the present state mental institutions; (2) establishment of additional intensive treatment units at the mental hospitals, and (3) setting up of a pilot mental health center probably somewhere in Southwest Louisiana.
"A fair balance in those three things is our first concern," Dr. Grant says.
The report, prepared by the survey and planning committee on mental health needs in Louisiana, stressed throughout the advantages of early and intense treatment compared to less expensive care over a prolonged period.
