Plans for the formation of a state association for retarded children were formulated during the Louisiana Conference for Retarded Children which ended Sunday at Louisiana State university in Baton Rouge.
Rabbi Nathaniel Share, who has been appointed chairman of a committee to work out details for the organization of the group, made the announcement of the plans.
Rabbi Share said that the conference set up a program of five objectives for the new group. They are:
1. Co-operation with the state department of health, welfare, education, institutions, the Louisiana youth commission, and the Tulane university and LSU medical schools in seeking funds for the establishment of an evaluation center, for exceptional children. The State Legislature has authorized the establishment of the center but has not appropriated funds for it.
2. Develop an education and training program at the State Colony and Training School at Pineville with the co-operation and guidance of the state department of
education.
3. Expand the programs of professional training in the colleges and universities of the state in the field of education, psychology, medicine and social work as they pertain to the mentally retarded.
4. Encourage the Louisiana youth commission to enlarge a program of studies concerning the mentally retarded in Louisiana.
5. Bring about a more realistic program of state reimbursement to' local boards of education for programs of service to exceptional children.
Rabbi Share said that other persons named to the organizational committee were Hubert F. Williams, Lawrence E. Higgins and Dr. Paul C. Young, Baton Rouge; Dr. Albert Clark, Shreveport; Mrs. Maude Buckingham, Lafayette; Norman C. Carmouche, Napoleon-ville; Mrs. E. J. Villarrubia, Boga-lusa; V. L. Chappius, Rayne, and Dr. Nelson K.
