Mental Health Week is being observed this week in New Orleans and throughout the state and nation.
The observance in Louisiana is sponsored by the Louisiana Society for Mental Health, directed by Dr. Loyd Ws Rowland, and the state department of institutions of which. E. Roy Rogilio is chief of the
mental health division,
Dr. Rowland today declared that while Louisiana still has a 'long way to go" in providing proper kb stitutional care for the mentally ill, "recent progress has been gratifying.'1 Praises Hew Hospital
He termed the Southeast Louisiana hospital "at Mandeville "the newest and most modern institution in the South with the finest equipment available for the treatment of mental illness."
There is a definite trend, according to Dr. Rowland, toward placement of. psychiatric units in general hospitals. Two examples cited were new units in Touro infirmary and Charity hospital,
Gov. Robert F. Kennon has signed a proclamation concerning the week.
Two "psychiatric aid-of-the-year" awards will be made at 2 p. m. tomorrow at the Central Louisiana State hospital, Pineville, in connection with the observance. W. A. Hawkins, psychologist, will be master of ceremonies. Lectures Scheduled
A series of lectures by psychiatrists will mark the observance locally.
