Dr. James Kirby Howles, head of the LSU medical school's dermatology department since 1937, died today.
Dr. Howies, 55, died of a heart attack at his residence, 1938 State.
Medical school officials said he was stricken in bed.
In 1933 he was named assistant professor of dermatology at LSU. This was the year the school of medicine was founded.
Four years later he was named to head,the department.
He was a native of Memphis, Tenn., and received his MD degree from the University of Cincinnati in 1929.
Dr. Howles interned at the Kansas City General Hospital and in 1932 received a master of medical science degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
