Belief that a special sense organ centrally located in the brain is responsible for thirst was expressed here Thursday by Dr. Yngve Zotte-man, Stockholm, Sweden, professor of physiology at the Royal Veterinary college.
Dr. Zotteman, in this country at the invitation of the Josiah Macy foundation, told of an experiment, recently carried on in Sweden, which "proves this fact."
"The experiment showed that one drop of salt solution, injected directly into a specific region of the middle brain, will produce an immediate and overwhelming thirst," explained the visiting doctor, who said he is a physician rather than a veterinarian. Goat Drank Two Gallons
"My young associate, Dr. Benat Andersson, carried out the experiment," he added. "For this purpose, he used a young, 60-pound goat.. This goat received an injection of one drop of salt solution in the middle section of its brain. Within 10 minutes the goat was so thirsty it drank two gallons of water....The visiting physician also showed slides during his lecture. He was introduced at the meeting by Dr. A. Sidney Harris, professor of physiology at the LSU medical school. [PHOTO CAPTION READS] DR. YNGVE ZOTTEMAN
