A cancer registry is being organized at Charity hospital in cooperation with the American Cancer Society, the Louisiana state: board of health and the Louisiana State university school of medcine.
The registry will consist of files of all hospital patients who have cancer, with diagnosis, treatment and clinical course recorded, as jrecommended by the American College of Surgeons for all hospitals where cancer is seen.
The records will be used to evaluate the types od cancer and to inventory results of treatment. It will also be used to follow up on cases and to contact patients who do not return for treatment because of various reasons. An annual report will be published.
A tumor follow-up service, organized at the hospital five years ago, will be expanded to include the registry. Some 10,000 malignant cases registered presently will be placed on file in the registry. About 1800 additional cases are expected to be added annually.
