A psychotic patient shot and critically wounded a woman physician near Touro Infirmary Saturday, then fatally wounded himself with his .38-caliber pistol. The doctor is Tillye Cornman, a neurologist. The man was Paul P. Toca, 44, of 911 Dauphine, a former Dock Board patrolman, who has been under treatment of a psychiatrist for many months.
Dr. Nicholas J. Chetta, Orleans parish coroner, said a note found among Toca's effects related that he was dissatisfied with results obtained from his treatment. It set forth that Toca was in a highly nervous condition as a consequence, and said cryptically that he was going "to take care of it." Mrs. Alice Toca, his mother, said that he had been "very nervous for a long time and complained how terrible he was feeling. He said the doctors didn't do anything to help him —just gave him dope." Toca stopped Dr. Cornman in the doorway of her office at 1525 Aline and fired his pistol into her abdomen. He then put his pistol to his head and pulled the trigger. The bullet entered the skull near his left temple.
The shooting took place shortly after noon. Toca died at Touro at 1:15 p. m. [PHOTO CAPTION READS] Dr. TILLYE CORNMAN In critical condition.; PAUL P. TOCA
