The national emergency is mak-j ing itself felt in Louisiana State University's School of Medicine.
Dean William W. Frye reports that the resident staff, serving at Charity Hospital in some departments, has already been more depleted than during World War II.
Many of the residents are recently graduated MD's, and have been called back into military service because of their ASTP or V-12 training.
"We've managed to replace them so far," Dr. Frye said, "but some other institutions have not been so fortunate, and we'll undoubtedly have more trouble in the future."
STUDENTS DEFERRED
Regardless of their military status, students still in medical school and those whose applications have been accepted for next year, are deferred through their year of internship, he pointed out. However, the Army and Navy both are urging medical students to apply for commissions.
