Creator unknown. [THE ROYAL FAMILY OF PRUSSIA.
At the organization of the new Parliament of the new Kingdom of Prussia, the King, WILLIAM I., and all the royal family, were present. The late war between Prussia and Austria, and the political efforts for the reconstruction of the German Confederation-the evident purpose of the King being to revive the old “Empire of Germany,” with himself as Emperor-have brought the principal personages of the family prominently before the public.
The King, WILLIAM I., was born in 1797, and was the second son of FREDERICK WILLIAM III. When his elder brother, King FREDERICK WILLIAM IV., became insane in 1858, WILLIAM, then Commander-in-Chief of the Prussian army, was declared Regent. His first act was to dismiss the Cabinet of his brother, composed entirely of leaders of the aristocratic party, and to establish a new Administration on the liberal policy which has since so materially advanced the prosperity of the Prussian people. His insane brother died in 1861 without issue, and the Regent became King under the title of WILLIAM I.
His queen, AUGUSTA, is the daughter of the Grand Duke of Weimar. She is now 56 years of age, and was married to the King when he was merely a Prince of the Realm.
The only son and the heir to the throne is the Crown Prince, FREDERICK WILLIAM, who is represented in the engraving on the left of his father. He is frequently confounded by American readers and writers with the Prince royal, FREDERICK CHARLES, his cousin, who is represented on the other side of the engraving. This error has resulted from the similarity of name and title, the fact that each commanded a corps of the army in the campaign of Sadowa, and that both were equally gallant and distinguished on that blood field. The Crown Prince, FREDERICK WILLIAM, was born in 1831. It was he who in 1858, just before his father’s elevation to the throne, married the eldest daughter of Queen VICTORIA of England. His wife and their second child, Princess CHARLOTTE, are represented by the side of the Crown Prince. The eldest child of the young couple, Prince FREDERICK WILLIAM [the sixth of the name] is represented at the feet of his grand-parents.
The Prince Royal, FREDERICK CHARLES, the nephew of the King, is commander of a corps of the Prussian army. He was born in 1828, and is a bachelor.
The Grand Duke of Baden, Prince FREDERICK, is a son-in-law of the King of Prussia, having married in 1856 his only daughter, Princess LOUISA MARY, who is represented at his side.
NAMES OF EACH PERSON: PRINCE FREDERICK CHARLES; QUEEN AUGUSTA; DUCHESS OF BADEN; PRINCE FREDERICK WILLIAM; GRAND DUKE OF BADEN; KING WILIAM I.; PRINCE FREDERICK WILLIAM; PRINCESS VICTORIA and PRINCESS CHARLOTTE]. |
