Dr. Edgar Galloway
Resignation
Okayed for
CMMC Head
By Margaret Martin
Times Medical Writer
The Confederate Memorial
Medical Center directors last
night approved the resignation
of hospital director Dr. Edgar
Galloway. The resignation is
effective when a new adminis-trator
is found.
Galloway — who is 78 years
old — didn't exactly resign. He
offered to stay.
In a l e t t e r to the new
C h a i r m a n Harold K. Quinn.
Galloway said he had enjoyed
his work as head of Confederate
land its predecessor C h a r i t y
Hospital.
He worked for the hospital on
three occasions since 1940 for a
little better than 22 years.
Enjoyed Work
"I have enjoyed my work and
am very grateful for the privi-lege
of serving our state and
community, and I feel that I am
still mentally and physically
capable.
"However, you may consider
this as my resignation at a time
suitable to you should you or
your board wish to appoint
someone else," the letter said.
However, he said, "should you
wish me to continue, I will be
happy to do so, and assure you
of my full cooperation and very
best efforts."
The board — recently appoinl-ed
by Gov. Edwin Edwards —
did not wish him to continue.
Quinn said he has already
gotten approval from the Divi-sion
of Administration to draw
up a retirement agreement for
Galloway. (Galloway started his
second round of service with the
hospital when he was 60 and not
eligible for the retirement
rolls.)
Some Controversy
Galloway's resignation was
not accepted without some con-troversy,
though.
W. J. Hill Jr. made a motion
that Galloway's resignation not
be accepted.
But Ralph Hall offered a
substitute motion — which was
accepted 6 to 4 — "until the
committee finds someone to
take Dr. Galloway's place."
Hill seemed puzzled as to why
the board would want to accept
the directors' resignation, and
q u e r i e d Associate Dean Dr.
George R. Meneely as to the
LSU Medical School's opinion on
the matter.
Meneely would not comment.
saying he was not a member of
the board and was only a
representative of D e a n Dr.
Edgar Hull.
The final vote on the resolu-tion
was unanimous.
Galloway was apparently sur-prised
by the board's action. He
was visibly shaken and his voice
wavered w h e n he made a
statement, saying he had given
his best to the institution and
the people.
Confidence Factor
He said he had had the
confidence of every board he
had served and didn't care to
serve if he didn't have the
confidence and support of the
board.
"I don't have to and I'm not
going to." he said.
He added he had not always
been loved by everyone and
would go away with some not
loving him.
Asked by The Times if this
meant he would leave before the
b o a r d finds a replacement.
Galloway said he had no further
statement to make.
