As Med School Vote Nears—
'Joint Session' Hears Governor
By HARRY TAYLOR
Journal Capital Writer
BATON ROUGE—"Who said
I wasn't going to address a
joint session" Gov. John J.
McKeithen jokingly said here
last night when he was intro-duced
to the Shreveport Day
Dinner for the Legislature and
top state officials.
And, in fact, that is exactly
what Gov. McKeithen, who has
not addressed either the House
or Senate during this session,
was doing because a majority
of both houses was present at
the dinner party.
GOV. McKEITHEN was in-troduced
at the d i n n e r by
Mayor Clyde E. Fant, the host
for the affair held at Bob and
Jake's Club and attended by
about 100 Shreveport residents.
The Shreveport group, attend-ing
the dinner, which was co-ordinated
by the Shreveport
Chamber of Commerce, this
morning went to the governor's
mansion at 9 for coffee with
Gov. and Mrs. McKeithen.
FOLLOWING THE coffee, at
which they were joined by
about 22 physicians who flew
here this morning from Shreve-port,
the group went to the
Legislature to visit the House
of Representatives where the
bill to finance the Shreveport
branch of the Louisiana State
University Medical School was
scheduled to come up for a
final vote.
In his brief talk at the din-ner,
Gov. McKeithen recalled
another Shreveport Day two
years ago when a Shreveport
delegation visited him at the
mansion just after he had come
down with a case of mumps.
"AFTER I HAD been so
soundly defeated by my Re-publican
opponent," the gov-ernor
said, referring jokingly
to his successful general elec-tion
campaign over Charlton
H. Lyons of Shreveport, "I
couldn't think of anybody bet-ter
to give the mumps."
The governor went on to say,
however, that he was only
joking, pointing out that "in
the second primary when I
needed them to the most, the
people of Shreveport came
through for me . . . and I
really appreciate it."
AS FOR THE general elec-
