| Title | Transcendental theory in an age of mechanical idealism : the socio-cultural criticism of Thomas Carlyle, Matthew Arnold, and John Stuart Mill |
| Author | Koestner, Pia U. |
| Keywords | University of New Orleans. Honors thesis. 1997.; University of New Orleans. Dept. of English. |
| Abstract/Introduction | In this thesis then, I will examine the theories of cultural transcendence proposed by Carlyle, Arnold and Mill. I will emphasize the positions of Carlyle and Arnold because in their singular ways they perpetuate the Romantic opposition to a rational orientation to human experience. Though I do not treat the works of Mill as extensively as those of Carlyle and Arnold, I feel it is important to include him in this discussion because he translates Carlyle's and Arnold's Romantic leanings into Victorian terms. |
