Abstract/Introduction	The nature of the Maya hieroglyphic writing system, and of the messages contained within it, was for generations one of the great enigmas of New World archaeology and, indeed, of the study of ancient civilizations in general. Similarly, its decipherment during the last four decades and the efforts to apply this new understanding of the system to more general interpretations of the overall nature of Maya culture, are generally recognized as outstanding achievements of scientific and historical scholarship. Interestingly, although the Maya hieroglyphs have attracted the attention of students since the late eighteenth century, very little progress was made in their interpretation for many years. This seems to have been due to a failure, for many years, to recognize that Maya writing was constructed on principles functionally very similar to those used in a number of early Old World civilizations, notably ancient Sumerian Cuneiform and Egyptian Hieroglyphics, for which decipherment was essentially achieved by the end of the nineteenth century. There can be no doubt that once the first break-through of Maya interpretation had taken place, the growing recognition of similarities to already deciphered writing systems was of great aid, both by giving encouragement (a puzzle solved several times in the past might be solved again) and by providing specific hints about how the writing under investigation might have functioned. This paper will, therefore, examine the recent successes in the decipherment of Maya writing, noting at appropriate points the significant similarities to the writing systems used in other ancient civilizations.
