| Title | An analysis of the relationship between funding and student performance : the case of the New Orleans Public School System |

| Abstract/Introduction | It is often assumed that student performance improves with increased funding. In this paper I examine the relationship between funding and performance in the context of the New Orleans Public School (NOPS) system. In doing so, I analyze the relationship over time as well as on a cross sectional basis (i.e. in comparison with similar cities in the Southern region of the United States). The study reports that the expected positive relation between funding and performance has not materialized, at least with respect to the New Orleans Public School system. This finding does not imply that the relation does not exist, but suggests that, in order for the funding to improve student performance, it must be allocated in a more effective and targeted manner. It appears that in the case of NOPS, the funding has been historically misallocated. |
