Seven Day Preparation- -----Ship to Bizerte
Detraining after a long trip from Ft. Jackson found us scrambling into trucks ~o get
"'
out ''of 'a downpour. A wet reception did not dampen our· spirtts. Laden with pistol belt,
eanteen, musette bag, helmet , and overcoat we looked anything but feminine ,but in the. back
of a truck it did not matter.
Words of our favorite tunes echoed through the air a.. s -.we rode to Camp Shanks HOspital
.tl
~at is this,we sayaa we reach our destination? Bars on the windows! Yes, Shanks Hospital
was once a mental institute. This gave a certain group or W~A.C.s,who were drilling one
day,, the occasion tp sing back The Prison Song when a group of us peered through the bars
~ ~ singing to them - We Dont Have to March Like the W.~c.s,
Two by two and in alfabetical . order the awed group or nurses were taken up .5 stories
~d then hurdled into a large room which was later called the Zoo. An interesting assortment
'
ot females living together and believe it or not , no hair pulling. The double decked beds
were lined up ,in three rows. Every girl ran for a bunk and quickly debrided herself or the
G.I. articals covering her body.
It .·seemed aa though everyone wanted an upper bunk--- better to see all. The girls ~ on tb
lower decks suffered, yes poor things, they had to duck when a pair of dangling legs came
their way~ At 6 A.M., though, the lower decks had to awaken the uppers by giving a gentle
kick on the springs. This made sleepy eyed damsels start the day off in bouncing good spirit.
Orders had been given to wash faces in shifts because of limited time and ., space • . Five
minutes were alloted and a girl at the door gave signals tor the next shift. It you missed
out on~ your schedule you had to wait till 116 girls had completed their duties and sacritic
,,
a good~ place in the chow line besides. Time was the only thing that mattered. •
· All day long clothing was being issued and traded. Unfortunate Queenie Glover and
Hattie Cailouett had to go down to the warehouse at 2 oclock one morning to get an .issue of
clothing.. Speed in getting prepared was the height of our thoughts.
Papers galore were signed for the 201 tile, instructions for behavior on the boat were
given, barracks bags and bedding rolls Wlft"e being packed,· and at any hour numeroue 'little
'things were happening. Teamwoork and cooperation kept things on the ball.
