Interview - March 31, 1971
In North Africa clinics were finally set up in nissen huts. Much of
the equipment such as cuspidors, etc .• was improvised. Cuspidors made
out of flat allied unit helmets and gas mask tubing. At first used foot pedal
drills, finally got motorized drills which then carried through Italy.
J Air raid was a beautiful sight the first time it was seen. When flak
started falling in your vicinity it lost some of its appeal. In addition to air
raid which occurred while on ship, had several raids in vicinity of hospital
area in September. No damage from enemy planes but some damage of
tents and equipment from flak.
Had pleasant trip across Atlantic, weather was good. Ship was packed.
Transport was a converted cruise ship that had been on the New York-Florida
run, sister ship of the Morro Castle. Service was good on ship and food
., was good in officer's mess . \
.J The Vand erbilt unit was on ship with 64th, Tulane unit also in convoy.
Most of personnel on ship were medical department. The Texas was flagship

ov convoy. In addition had two carriers and a number of destroyers or D. E.'s

J Doesn't remember whether went by Gibraltar during day or during
night. Once got into Mediterranean, convoy split up, parts going to the
various north African ports. Some shelling of convoy from African coast.
\ First air raid occurred just at dusk.
) When finally approached port, laid off Bizerti almost all day. landing
late in evening. It was thought by many of personnel that they would set up
