Interview - July 13, 1971
Following the attack on Pearl Harbor recruiting of nurses began in
New Orleans. In addition to those who were recruited, quite a number who
were already assigned to Lagarde General Hospital requested transfer to
64th for overseas duty. They thought that the 64th would go over shortly
after activation.
As far as know nurses were not invited to the banquit given for the
doctors when notification of activation of hospital was given.
When hospital first activated, nurses were still wearing blue wool
dress uniform. Were issued regular army uniforms at Camp Shanks.
After first week or so at Jackson began working in hospital and having
drill. and military subjects in afternoon. Were taught by enlisted men.
apparently cadre from 56th.
Living quarters at Jackson was in barracks adjacent to station hospital
nurses.
Corps men of 64th also worked in hospital so doctors, nurses and corps
men got to work together. This fluctuated depending upon whether or not
there was space in the hospital.
One of the most vivid memories in North Africa is of eating with sand
and flies. (No mess hall for several weeks.) There were snakes and mice
in the fields and some of the nurses were in constant fear of them getting
in tents. Thought that it would be much better when they got to Italy but
