Boat to Naples
On Feb. 29, 1941~ ,at five-thirty A.M. some of the nurses were going to .church.for
the 'last time ·in Africa. It 111as a big day and an excitinJ new journey to Italy.
A dotail of· our enlisted men came over tp ou.,. p""efab to help us get our bedding-:
rolls together~ · By eight-thirty A.M. w~were all dreRsed and ready to go. Per
the 1'\rmy it~ hurry up and vrait. Not U."ltil ten A.M. did our tr'lnsportation come. In the
meA.nwhi·le ewe took pictures and '!'latched the Arabs frantically ... ooting' in our
field.
The trucks took us to the ..uizerte docks where we boarded
new hospital ship. We were the only hospital unit_ taken aboard.
All th~ hoy friends came towave good-bye and nn erchestra played our tunes
on the docks for an hou ....
We weav~(l our wa;r out of the scuttled harbor and had a moderatly smooth voyage all
~ · he way to Naples eYcept for the nieht we passed through a .hail storm. There were nany pale
faced ladies on this tripj
•. In our leisure we played shuffle board,, read out on ·the sun deck, and gazed over
the' railing to see nnything passing by. At night music 1 ·eas played over a .. P .A: system. We
were lu~led to -sleep.

we went to the train station, .boarded n hospital train, and just after the
