Shreveport's $30.8 million medical
school building was dedicated Tues-day,
1,493 days after groundbreaking,
to those "who live to heal."
Gov. Edwin Edwards, dedicatory
speaker, highlighted a program that
included leaders in medical and gov-ernmental
circles instrumental in
bringing about Louisiana State
University School of Medicine in
Shreveport. :>
"As they dedicate their lives to
healing the living," said Edwards, "let
us dedicate this building to those who
live to heal."
About 1,000 persons jammed the
plaza to the medical school's King
Highway entrance to observe the
ceremonies. A tour of the Com-prehensive
Care Teaching Facility and
reception followed.
Although the dedication has been
made, the building still has not been
totally completed. Medical school of-ficials
expect classes to be in the
building in November. A public tour of
the complete facility will be held this
spring, said Dean Ike Muslow.
Dr. Edgar Hull, emeritus dean and
first dean of the medical school, drew
a standing ovation from the crowd as
did Gov. Edwards and former Gov.
John McKeithen.
"Lord, it is good for us to be here,"
Dr. Hull said, "for today marks a
milestone in the history of this great
state and city."
if "This building," he said, "stands
as a tribute to hundreds of men and
women."
"I predict to you in a very short
time, no more than five years, that
Shreveport will enjoy being one of the
great medical centers of the South,"
said Dr. Allen A. Copping of New
Orleans, Chancellor of the LSU
Medical Center.
Also speaking were Dr. Martin D.
Woodin, president of the LSU Universi-ty
System, and Dr. Clifford G. Grulee
Jr., vice chancellor of the Shreveport
medical school and former dean.
LSU was not a major factor in
Northwest Louisiana for a long time,
Dr. Woodin told the crowd, but with
LSU and the medical school, "LSU is
in Shreveport in a big way and we are'
proud to be a part of this com-munity."
The medical school building, said
Dr. Grulee, is "not only an opportuni-ty
to us, as teachers, but a challenge
McKeithen, governor at the time
the medical school was created, paid
tribute to Dr. Hull in his speech.
"We've had a few great people in
our state; some by birth, some by
choice." Dr. Hull, he said, is great by
choice and because of his work.
Singled out by Dr. Muslow for his
contributions to the medical school's
growth was Dr. George Meneely,
coordinator of plans and programs for
the medical school.
More than anyone else, said Dr.
Muslow, Dr. Meneely deserves credit
for planning the medical school.
