50 years
and cancer
fight goes on
By DONNA O'NEAL
Journal Staff Writer
Times change, and so does medi-cal
treatment — usually for the
better.
Fifty years ago, what began as a
cancer clinic at LSU Medical Cen-ter
— then known as Charity Hos-pital
— since has been disbanded.
Elaine King, public relations of-ficer
for the hospital, said the
clinic — known as the O.K. Allen
Cancer Clinic — was disbanded
Today, treatment for cancer at
the hospital has diversified into
various clinics — each specializing
in treating a specific form of
cancer, she said.
But 50 years ago, 10 doctors —
described in a newspaper article
as "well-known Shreveport physi-cians"
— were named to head the
new clinic.
An account of the clinic's open-ing
in the Journal's July 13, 1932,
edition said the clinic had equip-ment
valued at $20,000 — $11,000
of which was used to buy 150
milligrams of radium.
Dr. E.L. Sanderson, the hospital
superintendent, announced the
opening of the clinic. The article
said it was one of the few of its
kind in the South at that time.
The article quoted Sanderson as
saying the new facilities to handle
additional patients were un-surpassed
at any similar clinic in
the country.
Even then, the word "cancer,"
conjured up fears of death and
suffering. But the hospital had its
own way to combat those fears. To
keep from frightening possible pa-tients
or "causing them undue
alarm," the newspaper article
said, a decision was made to later
change the clinic's name to the
Tumor Clinic.
The procedure to treat cancer
patients at the clinic a half century
ago specified for patients to check
in at noon on Tuesdays. Staff meet-ings
were held at that time, and
patients were examined then for a
"tentative diagnosis" to be made,
the article said.
The staff physicians were: Drs.
Guy Caldwell, Sam Kerlin, Wayles
Gorton, J.D. Woolworth, O.C.
Rigby, C.B. Erickson, D.H. Dun-can,
I.B: Rougon, Harold F.G. Ed-wards
and W.R. Mathews, the staff
pathologist.
