Medical center wing topped

The Times
The 11-story wing under construc-tion
at LSU Medical Center was
"topped out" Thursday when an
Italian rock pine was hoisted to the
top.
With Chancellor Allen A. Copping
at their elbow, Dr. George Meneely of
LSUMC-Shreveport and Dr. Louis C.
Pendleton of the LSU Board of Super-visors
pulled the switch that il-luminated
the evergreen atop the
stairwell that rises from the base-ment
to the 10th floor.
Project Superintendent Fred
Brown of Robert E. McKee Inc. of
Dallas, general contractors, said the
lighted tree would remain there over-night
then be taken down to even-tually
be planted near the entrance to
the new wing.
"Topping out" is a traditional rite
in the construction industry, signi-fying
completion of structural and
framework. By custom, going back
100 years, Brown said, the pine is the
tree of choice because it brings good
luck and "keeps the evil spirits
away."
The construction superintendent
presided at the ceremony held at the
foot of the $23 million wing and was
host for the refreshments which
McKee served afterward to construc-tion
workers and guests.
Other McKee personnel on hand for
the event were Carl Olson, construc-tion
manager; J.B. Caldwell, project
engineer; M. Haggard and Gary
Neathery, field engineers; Chris
Atkins and Huey Lipsey, engineer
helpers; Ginny Schuster, field office
manager; Wayne Ponder, general
carpenter foreman; Melvin Legg,
carpenter foreman; and Lee Combs,
labor foreman.
There for the medical center were
Dr. Perry G. Rigby, dean of the medi-cal
school; Robert C. Hall, adminis-trator
of LSU Hospital; L. Calhoun
Allen, coordinator of plans and pro-grams;
Dr. Ike Muslow, vice chan-cellor;
and faculty, staff and per-sonnel.
Chancellor Copping was here
from New Orleans for the ceremony.
